My name is Tristan Boyd. I finished my university studies in graphic design and advertising in 1996 and since then have worked in a variety of advertising, marketing and design roles including 10 years building and running my own online marketing and web design company in Sydney Australia. Since selling my company and moving to Austria in 2011 I have worked for a variety of businesses and start ups including creating the initial brand identity and marketing department for Bitmovin, a well known Austrian start up.

If there is one thing I have learnt in over 20 years of marketing, it is that strategy is the key to success. No matter how good your creatives are, or how much money you can spend on advertising, if you have not clearly defined measurable objectives, you run the risk of going around in circles and never achieving your goals. After all, how can you achieve a goal if you don’t know exactly what it is?

Marketing planning and strategic planning might sound like big jobs, and for larger companies with large teams it should be, but for smaller, more agile organisations and start ups it can often be really simple. Even just stepping back to examine you current activities from a strategic perspective can lead to simple changes that in turn can make significant improvements to you marketing programs.
